Makita Drill Repair – Replacing the Speed Change Lever (Makita Part # 126289-3)

“The speed change lever allows you to shift
the gearing in your cordless drills transmission. This changes the grill speed range, from high
speed and low speed. The change lever rubs against a metal leaf
spring, which locks it in place. Over time, the lever can wear causing it to
slip out of gear. If the drill is dropped, the lever can be
broken. Replacing the speed change lever is a repair
that you can do yourself and I’m going to show you how. Hi, I’m Mark Sodja. Do-it-yourself repairs like these are easier
than you might think. From lawn machines to cordless drills, kitchen
mixers, outdoor grills, our how-to videos walk you through each repair from start to
finish, so doing it yourself means never having to do it alone. Let’s get started. I’ll begin by removing the rear cover from
the housing. Now I’ll remove one half of the housing. There’s a label between the two sides of the
housing, I’ll cut that label with a knife. Now I can separate the two halves. With the housing removed, I have access to
the selector and I’ll go ahead and remove it. I’ll lift the motor and gearbox assembly slightly
away from the housing. Just enough so I can remove the selector. Now I can install the new selector. I’ll take one of the springs and pull it away
from the housing, being careful not to lose it. I’ll hook that spring onto the small pin on
the switch that’s attached to the transmission. I’ll then compress the spring and push the
selector into the housing. I’ll make sure the transmission, motor and
brush ring all line with the housing, and make sure that the switch and wires are all
tucked firmly into the housing. Now reinstall the housing and secure it with
the screws. I’ll finish up by reinstalling the rear cover. That’s all it takes to replace the speed change
lever in your cordless drill. Be sure to check back often for new videos
and expert advice. If you found this video helpful, give us a
