RV Water Heater Troubleshooting & full-time RVer weekly update

What is up everybody! Today is Wednesday and
today we’re going to talk about a problem we had with our hot water heater
and how we fixed it. Stay tuned for an important message on what NOT to do!
Relevant. Relatable and Reliable information from full-time RVers.
So, this didn’t happen just all of a sudden…… it was kind of slow and worked
sometimes it wouldn’t work another time and then it just all of a sudden just
stopped working. We went to Camping World yep we got a board what was it was normally 200
bucks but ours is an older water heater so this one was discontinued so they
sold it to us at $95 – which we thought was a fantastic deal, then when you get
online you look on Amazon it’s like the same price…. we installed that.. it
didn’t fit, so I was like oh no Camping World sold us the wrong motherboard, what
can you do? I unplugged everything, I cleaned all the electrodes and then I
started getting my test light and started testing each wire individually
to see if it had… if it was communicating… OK turn it on – turn it off – turn it on turn it off – turn it on – okay,
it’s talking…. I realized it was communicating when Kerry was turning
that on and off the light on my tester was going on and off so I knew it
was communicating. Then what I decided to do was …all right let me look at this and
see if there’s an issue here that I can find. I realized…. I saw that little jumper
cable that somebody had fashioned. Let me see here and I said you know what this is
probably the problem…. checked that jumper cable it was getting power but on the
other end of it it wasn’t getting power so then I realized okay this jumper
cable is where the issue is, removed it plugged in voila!
It’s on! I know – turn it off ! oh my goodness so this is the problem. This wire here… this
was an extender put on by somebody else because this wire is barely long enough
to reach here. They say “keep it simple” and I go and buy a whole damn new board and if I
would have just come out here and poked around with my little light there I
probably would have figured out and seen this. All right, so this is our
opportunity to get you caught up on what we’ve been up to this last week. We left
you last in Indiana where we were at Shipshewana Indiana, we had a great time at the
creator summit then we trekked on up to upstate New York – Plattsburgh New York to
be exact it was cold and windy… well there was
a windstorm last night our booth was destroyed… I had to do some
work at a metal detecting rally, I got to get out and do a little bit of hunting
myself but there were a lot of cool things found at this metal detecting
rally -some war of 1812 stuff some colonial stuff some Revolutionary War
stuff a real blast… Man that’s beautiful detail thanks man again what
were you using? I was using a t2 classic Boy, tearing it up! That machine is
absolutely killer. Awesome man, Congrats! Thanks man! One thing I really loved out of all of that was… Russ called me at one point
during the day to tell me somebody recognized him.. not from his metal detecting
background yeah but from the RV channel – yeah The Roads We Roam I… know it blew me away.
All right, so while Russ was off playing with Playing?? That was work! I brought a
paycheck home didn’t I? Yes… okay that’s work, okay so while Russ was working yes
very hard I had to do the Sunday live stream and I was terrified because I was
going to have to do it by myself.. here we are at Pound the Ground …unfortunately
I’m not gonna be able to be in that live chat today because I’m here at this
event. Dave and Lynn Castleman came to the rescue
they drove out of their way and came and joined me for the live stream had a
blast thank you so much guys for joining in …yeah guys thank you made me feel a
lot better knowing that Kerry wasn’t all here by herself I know you could do it
but it’s really difficult to keep conversation going for an hour not so
much in our groups because we’ve got so many great people with so many great
topics but still you didn’t have to do it by yourself so that was cool and you
got off of work early I did I did yeah now one of the things that came up
during the conversation with Dave and Lynn while they were here…. they own a
tab 320 one of the ones with that back camper kitchen – the clamshell
exactly and they had talked about Harvest Hosts.. they did not think that
they could be a member of harvest host because they had that clamshell kitchen
yeah… not true …to be a harvest host member and to camp at some of these
sites you have to have a self-contained unit which means your bed and a
bathroom so after our live stream our friends Patty and Patrick from Travels
with Delaney had their live stream so a bunch of us jumped from ours right on
over to theirs and I noticed something during this video that Patrick stole my
glasses… oh really yes if you look at the video
his glasses are incredibly similar to mine ..well we’ll have to check it out
yeah I gotta call him out on that one now during the last two live streams
that we’ve had I’ve noticed a lot of back-and-forth chatter about ebikes
yeah they’ve been big in our chats here I know we want to get one yes so I was
doing a little bit of research and I found out that at the end of August
national park service actually put out a new policy regarding
ebike’s that I’m going to put a link with the actual policy below because
I want you to get all of the information but the gist of it is that they will be
able to ….you are allowed to access pathways that typical bikes are normally
able to however you can’t have the ones that just ride it like a little
motorcycle – it’s for the pedal assist okay we’d like to thank our super
chatters from the last two weeks our top super chatter over the last two weeks
was Bubba bug Thank You Bubba bug and thank you everyone else it really does
help us support this channel and continue to bring you content. Now as
promised I’m gonna tell you how to avoid what happened to me so if you watch the
video I tell Kerry to turn it on turn it off turn it on and then I go about my
business I missed one turn it off so before you get on this, just make sure
your igniter inside the rig is turned off….. and it off turn it on okay it’s
talking so it’s the board I know Oh turn it off to see more
content like this check our playlists out here

  1. Nice new into. Man that looks cool on the metal detecting. Nice finds it sounds like. The live stream was great as always. Russ electrical is awful. I hate working with it. I understand. Lol

  2. Are you insinuating I wear ladies glasses? Well…..I may have been accused of that before as well by Patty. LOL

  3. Nice change to the intro, guys! Relevant, Relatable, Reliable ๐Ÿ‘ …and I'll ALWAYS stay til the end to see what NOT to do! I love learning the easy way after Russ learns the hard way, LOL!
Safe and happy travels! ~ ๐Ÿ’œ

  4. That was a close call. Glad you got it fixed. You need to put a disclaimer that no small animals or Russ were injured in the production of this video. Safe travels! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿš

  5. Russ I've said you looked just like the guy from First Texas. I just never put two together I've watched you for years on your metal detecting channel.

  6. Great Russ, nothing better than having a job that feels like play.

  7. Lol that made me jump when you got that bite. I'm a journeyman electrician an I know what it's like. I've said many times you can tell when someone going to make an electrician if they get a bite an don't quit. They might just make it.

  8. Glad you have it repaired. Good video ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

  9. The big problem i have always had with these types of LP water heaters is that it was always windy when i needed to work on them. Every once in a while you should change your anode on that thing to help extend it's life as well. Glad you got it working.

  10. At least you had outside ventilation… Imagine if that propane had built up for a few seconds… >BOOM< (no "chacka-lacka") ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Great video – and great lesson for the rest of us to dig around first before purchasing an expensive part.

  12. Good man … brings home a paycheck … gets the hot water back on …
Good woman … folds down the fort with the great live stream … does back-up technician (switch on, switch off) …
    What a TEAM!!!
    Thanks for sharing!

  13. ๐Ÿฅด Not today water heater, Russ got cat like reflexes….you made me jump…lol Missed you on Sunday, but Kerry did a fabulous job!!

  14. Did you count how many times you said โ€œturn it off… turn it on…โ€ ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‚

  15. Major Bummer!! Glad you are such a great team…could've used the Turn It Off as a drinking game!! LOL! ATB, Lisa&Rick

  16. i told y'all about e bikes months and months ago! They are so fun! Glad you didn't get exploded Russ.

  17. Yikes. I don't like messing around with electricity. I'm glad you were't hurt. Thanks for the information. I missed the Sunday chat. I'm glad it was a success. ~Lucy

  18. Oh my! You could have exploded. Then it would be like one of my videos. I love to make stuff explode, when the timing is right. Thanks as always, great information. Safe travels.

  19. Scared me when you fixed the water heater, so I can only imagine what you felt like. Be careful out there! We pulled the trigger on some ebikes. Patiently waiting on the freight shipment arrival. ๐Ÿ˜€

  20. Donโ€™t feel too bad Russ I once burnt all my nose hairs (and some of my regular hairs) off messing with my hot water heater in my 1983 33โ€™ Southwind once ๐Ÿ˜‚ I learned some important lessons that day.

  21. Russ your mike is too hot, either turn down your gain or move it a little farther away. Your audio will be much more natural.

  22. Tried an ebike this week & was blown away. Took the leap & bought one yesterday…..LOVE IT. Highly recommend! Been missing the live chats๐Ÿ˜’

  23. * I always prefer to learn from others mistakes….and not my own……..those pesky water heaters!*

  24. Glad it was just the extender and love how Billie was just sitting there listening to it. Maybe we can go hunting with you out west sometime & Kerry you did great on the live stream!

  25. Isnโ€™t it great work โ€œworkโ€ doesnโ€™t feel like โ€œworkโ€ because you enjoy it! ๐Ÿ˜

  26. So glad you were able to fix water heater fairly easily. Bummer you had to buy mother board and didnโ€™t need it. But now you have it as a spare part just in case๐Ÿ‘.

  27. Our water heater bombed out a year ago . Literally ! LOL Went to turn it on and a minute later it went BOOM and a ten foot flame shot out through the door . LOL I figured great stranger at the door weapon and did it again . That one was louder and bigger so I shut it all down . Figured a thermal coupling ? Nope , the whole thing is rusted rotten . Looking at electric on demand types now to fix the problem . Great episode.
